Hyaluronic acid supplements/ Viscosupplementation
In healthy joints, hyaluronic acid acts as a shock absorber and lubricant, allowing joints to move smoothly over each other. However, the acid appears to break down in people with osteoarthritis. Dr. Glaser helps patients with this condition by injecting a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid into knee joints to supplement naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. This may lessen pain and inflammation. A small amount of joint fluid is removed first to make room for the hyaluronic acid. The injections are given weekly for three or five weeks, depending on the choice of formulary, for example Synvisc or Hyalgan, etc. Dr. Glaser may choose this treatment so that the patient has the necessary amount of hyaluronic acid, which will help the body stimulate production of more hyaluronic acid in the joint. As a result, symptoms will improve and the patient will have less pain and better functional mobility.
