When oral medications do not relieve major joint pain but the patient is not to the point of pursuing surgery, Dr. Jeffrey Glaser provides the following pain-relieving solutions that may help.
CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS
For quick relief of pain and inflammation, Dr. Glaser may choose this treatment, during which he will inject corticosteroids directly into the knee joint. The therapeutic effect may last anywhere from a few days to more than six months. While the injections bring targeted relief to the joint this treatment and it lacks many of the side effects of oral corticosteroid medications, it is not without risks. For that reason, Dr. Glaser monitors and chooses the number of injections the patient will receive.
ARTHROCENTESIS
Through this procedure, Dr. Jeffrey Glaser will remove excess joint fluid through a hollow needle inserted into the joint space of the knee. Although the purpose of removing joint fluid from the knee is usually so that it can be tested in the lab, removing excess fluid can also quickly ease pain and swelling. Often after withdrawing fluid, Dr. Glaser will use the same puncture site where the fluid was removed to inject a corticosteroid preparation and/or anesthetic into the knee joint to further relieve pain and inflammation.
